Ever since the very beginning The Company Store has played a role, not only in Herman Miller's vision of environmental consciousness, but as an important benefit to the employee owners of Herman Miller. Our founding father believed so much in the idea of a store where employees would be able to use furniture destined for the landfill in their own homes or in the homes of their families, that he made sure to include the edict in the company by-laws. There will always be an employee store at Herman Miller. that was the pronouncement from the start, and although the store has taken on various forms over the years, one thing has remained constant; it is a staple of the employee experience.
Herman Miller has been recognized as an international symbol of excellence, but there are many generations of family in the surrounding area where Herman Miller isn't only a name but an integral part of their life and culture. The Herman Miller brand has been with the community as long as most can remember and there is a tangible sense of pride in the furniture that is manufactured here. The store is a part of the local community just like our employees and actively engages with that community. Employees have relied on the store for furnishing home offices, but have also helped their local counterparts through the partnership of the store. The store embodies the employee sense of pride in what they manufacture, and has become a source where their hard work is available to their families, schools, churches and more. The store has been providing furniture and work stations, otherwise out of the budget range for most small companies or not-for-profits, at a discount to this thriving local community since its inception.
